Green Bay Packers Nearly Pulled Off Draft Day Trade With This Team

The Green Bay Packers, by all accounts, had a very solid 2024 NFL Draft. They entered the event with 11 selections, giving them the ammunition to maneuver around the board should the opportunity have presented itself.

There was plenty of wheeling and dealing during this year’s draft, as teams put themselves in a position to not only hit positions of need but find value. Green Bay hit it out of the park in that regard, perfectly timing several selections.

One trade they made, with the New York Jets, enabled them to move up and select Oregon safety Evan Williams. According to Senior Bown director Jim Nagy, Williams was a popular name in the fourth and teams were angling to select him.

They also took two prospects, running back MarShawn Lloyd and quarterback Michael Pratt, right from under the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Packers, selecting one spot ahead of the Buccaneers in the third and seventh rounds, sniped both players like you do to your friend during a Fantasy Football draft.

It turns out, general manager Brian Gutekunst could have been even more active on the trade market. According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Packers were one of the teams the Seattle Seahawks talked to about moving down from No. 16.

“In the meantime, the Seahawks were discussing trade-back scenarios with the Pittsburgh Steelers (who picked 20th), Philadelphia Eagles (22nd), Minnesota Vikings (23rd), Green Bay Packers (25th) and Atlanta Falcons (43rd), according to sources.”

Green Bay, according to Henderson, did bow out as No. 16 got closer on the clock. It is anyone’s guess who the Packers would have targeted with that pick, but it is fair to assume they had a specific offensive lineman in mind. Instead of moving up, they patiently waited and snagged the versatile Jordan Morgan at No. 25.

Ultimately, both teams came away happy. The Seahawks selected Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy, who they believed could have gone much earlier. And the Packers came away with a player that will help them in the trenches.
